Report

Our plan was to do the Tripyramids, going up the Pine Bend Brook Trail and down the Sabbaday Brook Trail, which has numerous river crossings. With the previous day's 1" of rain and Matt's previous experience trying to cross the Sabbaday Brook, we thought it prudent to check out the brook's flow. See the pics of Sabbaday Falls and the right map! Hiking up about a mile confirmed our expectations that crossing would be difficult, even though we had come prepared with sandals and poles.

Caution prevailed. We aborted and drove to the Greeley Ponds Trailhead down the road and did East Osceola and Osceola---along with many other hikers. For comparison, see a previous solo hike from two winters ago.

No significant brook crossings needed, just a few challenging steep sections for me. After about 2 hours when we reached the first peak, Matt pulled out the anticipated "surprise" that he had carried gently in his pack: 3 Whiskey Stouts from private reserve. After we enjoyed their contents, a group coming from the other direction appeared. They commented that the 1 mile to Mt Osceola included "The Wall," which I definitely recalled from last time when we reached it. I took the right (not left) path, which was easier; Matt scurried up the steeper, right path. We got to the second peak at 3 hours and took a 20-minute break.

Coming back took a similar length of time, about 2.5 hours. Those steep sections coming off East Osceola are really slow for me. I watched nimble James bounce down in front of me and then wait for my catch-up. He was good-natured about enduring the waits. We also met a few people heading in on the trail between 2 and 3 o'clock, which seemed pretty iffy, since the sun was going down behind the hills soon. The final leg went quickly. The overall time of 5:40 was above the 5:20 book time; this is a tough trail for me.

Summary: ~1 hour on Sabbaday Brook and then 5:40 for Osceola Peaks, ~9.6 miles, ~3000' elevation gain
