In spite of the passenger navigator's mistakes in recommending a deviation from the car's GPS route, we arrived at the Appalachia trailhead by 0830 and got going soon after, choosing the Air Line route because it looked shorter---at least in distance. We made good time and reached treeline in 2 hours. Mike and Steve changed from microspikes to crampons, and Fred regretted not changing. The ascent up Mt Adams became windier with lots of exposure, some patches of ice and bare rock, and steepness. We had bundled up in a few stages just after coming above treeline as the wind got pretty brisk, I'd say 25-30 mph. The top seemed far away until we reached the top, but we were under book time. Steve's movie of the final few steps is a beauty.

After spending a few minutes on the top of Mt. Adams, we started hoofing it back down. Mike was a jack rabbit, and reached the Madison Hut first. A short break for lunch concluded with Mike starting to head home via Valley Way Trail while Steve and I strided up to Mt Madison---20 minutes up, two photos on top, and 20 minutes back to the Hut. Then we weren't sure of where the Valley Way Trail started. We took the only unmarked option---it was right. Nice pace with microspikes got us back in under 2 hours.

Notable events:

Summary: ~11 miles RT, ~7.75 hrs, 5000' total elevation rise (incl. 500' up Mt Madison)
